How to Say Yes to Every Fall Festival and Trunk-or-Treat Without Buying Another Unit
Written for bounce house operators with 1 to 20 units. Twelve minutes to read. Numbers are the ones operators cite themselves; where a figure is an estimate it says so.
1October is not your slow season. It is the busiest month you have.
Operators in Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky and Long Island say the same thing independently: October is the single busiest month of the year, and the last two Saturdays are the most contested dates on the calendar. One Houston operator puts it plainly: "October 24 and October 31 book first every year." Another: "Those are the most contested dates on our calendar because every church and school in two counties wants them."
2026 is worse than usual, because Halloween itself lands on a Saturday. Trunk-or-treats, church fall festivals and PTA carnivals all want the same three or four dates.
2What a fall festival actually rents
A church fall festival or school carnival typically rents six to seven items. Water slides are put away by October in most of the country, so the order is bouncers, combos, an obstacle course, and concessions. That is exactly the inventory that takes a theme panel.
| Event | What they ask for | Takes a panel? |
|---|---|---|
| Trunk-or-treat | One or two bouncers, friendly Halloween look, big lettering they can photograph | Yes |
| Church fall festival | Combo plus bouncer, harvest or "Happy Fall" look, nothing scary | Yes |
| PTA carnival | Obstacle course, bouncer, sometimes a slide indoors | Bouncer, yes |
| Backyard Halloween party | One combo, Halloween themed | Yes |
The request is almost never a specific character. It is "do you have a Halloween one" or "something for the fall festival." That is the whole opportunity. A plain modular jumper with the right panel on it is a Halloween one.
3The unit you THINK will rent
Industry advice to new operators is blunt: "One of the biggest mistakes you can make is buying units that you THINK will rent instead of what will rent." A themed unit "may look exciting, but usually appeals to a much smaller group." Operators report themed units that go out once or twice a month in season and sit from November to August, taking a trailer spot and a garage spot the whole time.
Here is the math on saying yes to a Halloween request two ways.
| Buy a themed 13x13 combo | Add a panel to the jumper you own | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $2,400 to $4,700 | $175 |
| Goes out | 1 to 2 times a month, October only | Every weekend the jumper already goes out |
| Storage | A trailer spot and a garage spot, all year | Rolls up. Fits behind the blower. |
| November | Sits | Swap it off. The jumper is a castle again. |
| Rentals to pay it off at $25 per themed add-on | 96 to 188 | 7 |
One operator's rule for any unit: "If any of my units don't go out at least 20 times per year then I'm getting rid of it." A themed unit rarely clears that bar. A panel does not have to, because the jumper under it already does.
4What to charge for the panel
Half the operators we looked at give the themed panel away free with the rental. The other half charge $15 to $50 as an add-on line on the quote. Charge for it. Churches and schools have a budget line for "themed" and expect to pay it.
- $25 per rental is the middle of the market and nobody blinks. At $25 a $175 panel pays for itself in seven rentals, which is one October.
- Put it on the booking page as its own line: "Themed panel: Halloween, Fall Festival, Trunk or Treat, +$25." Listing the themes by name is what gets it ticked.
- For a church that rents six items, offer the panel free on the bouncer and charge full price on everything else. The panel is what gets the photo, and the photo is next year's booking.
5Friendly, not frightening
The church crowd runs from three-year-olds to eleven-year-olds and the pastor is watching. Operators describe the look that works as "friendly designs like pumpkins, ghosts or silly monsters" and "not too intense for younger kids." The one Halloween design with hard sales evidence in the whole panel market is a friendly cartoon monster scene. Zombies sell too, but to backyard parties, not to churches.
For trunk-or-treats specifically, the request is the words. Churches want a jumper that says Trunk or Treat on the front so it shows up in every photo of the event. Until this season no printer made one; operators were hanging homemade lettering banners.
- Trunk or Treat lettering for church and school events
- Friendly monsters for mixed-age Halloween bookings
- Black cats and pumpkins for the toddler end
- Fall Festival "Happy Fall" for harvest events that do not want Halloween at all, and it carries through Thanksgiving
6The sixty-second swap, and making panels last five seasons
- Inflate the unit. Panels go on inflated, never flat.
- Peel the old panel off from one top corner. Sewn velcro comes away clean; glued velcro is the kind that peels at the corners.
- Line the new panel's top edge up with the peak, press the centre first, then work out to each side, then down.
- Press the full perimeter once with your palm. Done. About a minute.
Storage: roll, never fold, print side out, and keep them out of the shed that gets damp. 16 oz commercial vinyl is the same weight as the jumper itself, so it survives what the jumper survives. Silly string does not come off anything, so put it in the waiver.
7The email to send this week
To every church, school and PTA you served last fall. Send it the first week of September, or today if you are reading this later than that.
